What buyers need to know about aircraft cable
Aircraft cable is small-diameter stranded steel cable, commonly made in 1x7, 7x7 or 7x19 construction. Buyers use it for controls, restraints, compact lifting systems, exercise equipment, stage systems, garage doors and made-to-length assemblies.
The name describes a product family. It does not prove that a cable is approved for an aircraft or flight-control application. Aerospace use requires the named specification, material and lot traceability, and evidence that the supplier's approval scope covers the supplied product.
Choose the construction for the bend and load
A 1x7 strand is relatively stiff and works best as a straight tension member. A 7x7 cable balances flexibility and abrasion resistance for moderate pulley service. A 7x19 cable contains more, finer wires and bends more readily around small sheaves.
Construction alone does not establish capacity. Confirm nominal diameter, minimum breaking strength, working-load basis, core or strand arrangement, lay and diameter tolerance from the quoted specification.
Match the material and finish to the environment
Galvanized carbon steel is a common value choice for outdoor controls and general assemblies. Stainless steel is often selected for marine, hygienic or corrosive service. Vinyl or nylon coating can protect adjacent surfaces and improve handling, but the coating must not hide the base cable specification.
If the cable will be swaged, crimped or fitted with terminals, name the cable material, finish and actual diameter under any coating so the termination is matched correctly.
Treat finished assemblies as engineered products
A cable assembly includes the cable, cut length, loops, sleeves, thimbles, hooks, stops or threaded terminals. The lowest-capacity component and the quality of the termination affect the assembly rating.
Provide a drawing or sample when length between bearing points, terminal orientation or installed geometry matters. Ask how the supplier validates pull strength and controls cut length, swage dimensions and component traceability.

Questions about aircraft cable
Is aircraft cable approved for use on aircraft?
Not automatically. The name is also used for commercial 7x7 and 7x19 cable. Flight-control use requires the exact aerospace specification, traceability and approval evidence.
What is the difference between 7x7 and 7x19 cable?
7x19 uses more, finer wires and is generally more flexible. 7x7 is stiffer and can offer a useful balance of flexibility and abrasion resistance.
Can aircraft cable be used for lifting?
Only when the specific cable and finished assembly are designed, rated and documented for that lifting duty. A generic product-family name is not a lifting rating.
