Acidic binders are suitable for bonding non-basic refractories. Due to their acidic character, they can be used for reactions with the raw materials at the lower temperature range. At temperatures above 200°C additional bonding occurs due to the formation of polymeric phosphates. Beyond 300°C the phosphate bond is irreversible and resistant against moisture degradation. At elevated temperatures, the strength is increased until the ceramic bond comes into effect.
