Our small linear actuator technology provides the highest force per package size available in the market: up to 190 pounds of force with stroke lengths up to 0.7 inches. Low Profile solenoids are available with dual-shaft extensions for pull or push use. The orientation of the solenoid determines the configuration.

What's the best way to specify a low-profile application's starting force requirement?

With our small linear actuators, we recommend applying a safety factor of 1.5. For example, a load requiring 4.5 lbs. of force should utilize a solenoid providing 4.5 × 1.5, or 6.75 lbs.

What enables low-profile solenoids to deliver so much force in such a compact unit?

The construction of the plunger assembly provides an auxiliary flux path (between large diameter places and the case), which permits a significant increase in force. In addition, the precision air-wound coil provides optimal copper density allowing greater force per unit volume than a typical bobbin-wound solenoid.

Is there a way we can achieve more controlled motion with low-profile solenoids?

If you need more consistent force or quieter operation, consider Soft Shift solenoids, a variation of the low- profile design that enables speed to be controlled by varying the voltage. This allows the unit to provide slow and smooth position control or high-speed, snap-action operation.
