Frame Design Styles

Ledex® open frame units are available in box frame and C frame design styles in a variety of models and sizes. Models are avaialable for continuous use and intermittent duty. For high-duty cycle applications, consider a magnetic latching open frame.

Box Frame

This solenoid has a four-sided closed box frame and solid plunger and is therefore more electrically efficient than the C frame solenoid. The closed box frame also provides improved mechanical design.

C Frame

C frame solenoids consist of a formed C-shaped steel frame and solid plunger. These solenoids are less efficient, but also less costly, than their box frame counterparts.

Magnetic Latching Variant Offers Bistable Functionality and Energy Efficiency

Ledex magnetic latching units have permanent magnets installed in the coil, which allow the plunger to be held in the energized position without power. This is useful for low-duty cycle applications in which the solenoid's “on” position is held indefinitely. Applying negative-polarity voltage enables the integral return spring to slide the plunger back to the de-energized position.

Although continuous duty, on/off solenoids tend to develop heat, magnetic latching solenoids do not, as no power is consumed in the energized state. Since magnetic latching solenoids are typically used in low-duty cycle applications, they are also perfect candidates for energy-conscious uses such as battery-powered applications operating with as little as 3 to 6 volts.

Do open-frame solenoids offer any sustainability advantages?

In low duty cycle applications, the magnetic latching variant enables the solenoid's "on" position to be held indefinitely with no power consumption or heat generation.

What is the typical service life of open-frame solenoids?

The standard version of this technology offers up to fifty thousand cycles. Custom designs can significantly increase life performance. If your application requires a higher life electric solenoid, see theLedex® Linear Tubular Solenoid.

Do I need to use the electric actuator with a heat sink?

The performance listed for our open frame electric actuator is based on no heat sink. Additional performance can be gained if the application utilizes a heat sink. Our application engineers can help you optimize the performance for your specific application.
