A high-integrity pressure protection system (HIPPS) is a safety-instrumented system (SIS) to protect a plant from over-pressure. HIPPS are used to shut off the source of the high pressure before the design pressure of the system is exceeded; it prevents loss of containment through rupture (explosion) of a line or vessel. HIPPS are designed to achieve SIL 3 rating (Safety Integrity Level) according to EC 61508, IEC 61511 and ANSI/ISA S84.01.
