Reinforcement wire, cord and strand

Reinforcement wire, cord and strand are high-strength steel products engineered to become part of another load-bearing material. They reinforce tires, conveyor belts, hoses or concrete rather than operating as exposed general-purpose wire.

This is an application-led category. Products may look similar in coil form, but their coatings, fatigue behavior, bond performance and dimensional controls are tied to the rubber or concrete system around them.

Buyers should treat these as separate engineered materials, not interchangeable high-strength wire. Each family is qualified for a particular host system, such as a tire compound, conveyor-belt construction, pressure hose or prestressed-concrete design.

Standards and certification

System approval is part of the product

Reinforcement materials are qualified with the composite or structural system that uses them. A generic material certificate may be necessary, but it is rarely sufficient by itself.

ASTM A416/A416M

Specification for low-relaxation seven-wire steel strand used in prestressed concrete.

EN 10138 series

European requirements for prestressing steels, including wire and strand.

ASTM A1074

Specification for hot-dipped galvanized steel strand used in prestressed concrete applications.

Customer qualification

Tire, hose and conveyor manufacturers often use proprietary adhesion, fatigue and production-approval tests.

Questions buyers ask

Direct answers about this product category

Supplier catalogs often use the same words for different constructions. These answers make the important distinctions explicit.

01What is reinforcement wire, cord and strand?
These are high-strength steel products engineered to work inside rubber, concrete or another composite. Tire bead wire anchors the tire to the rim. Fine steel cord reinforces tire belts. Larger cord reinforces conveyor belts and hoses. Prestressing strand places concrete in compression. Their coatings and constructions are designed around bonding and fatigue inside the host material.
02What is the difference between wire, cord and strand in reinforcement products?
Wire is a single drawn steel element. Cord is made by twisting fine filaments or strands into a flexible reinforcement. Strand is a defined group of wires, often seven in prestressed-concrete products. These terms describe construction, but the application specification also controls coating, strength, elongation, relaxation and bond behavior.
03Why is tire steel cord brass coated?
Brass coating helps the steel bond to rubber compounds during vulcanization and provides process protection. Coating composition, mass and uniformity affect adhesion and manufacturing stability. Tire producers normally qualify cord against their own rubber system, so supplier data should be supported by customer-specific adhesion and fatigue testing.
04How is conveyor-belt steel cord different from tire cord?
Conveyor-belt cord is sized and constructed to carry longitudinal tension across long belt systems and to work with the belt's splice design. Tire cord uses finer constructions optimized for tire shape, fatigue and rubber bonding. Both are composite reinforcements, but cord construction, elongation, coating and qualification methods differ.
05What does low relaxation mean for prestressed-concrete strand?
Relaxation is the gradual loss of stress in a tensioned steel strand held at a nearly constant strain. Low-relaxation strand is processed to reduce that loss, which helps the structure retain prestress over time. Project standards define the strength, relaxation test and dimensional requirements that the supplied lot must meet.
06What evidence should buyers request for reinforcement products?
Request lot traceability, construction and dimensional data, strength and elongation results, coating information and application-specific tests. Rubber reinforcement normally needs adhesion and fatigue qualification with the buyer's system. Prestressing strand needs strength, relaxation and material certificates under the project standard, plus coating or sheathing evidence when specified.
