Wire rope, cable and strand

Steel wire rope is a load-bearing assembly of wires twisted into strands, then laid around a core. Cable is often used for smaller-diameter or more flexible constructions. Strand is the component made from wires, and it can also be sold as a finished structural or support product.

The words rope, cable and strand are sometimes used interchangeably, but the construction changes how a product bends, rotates, resists abrasion and carries load. A useful comparison starts with the application, then checks diameter, wire finish, strand pattern, core and required breaking strength.

Wire rope is selected as part of a system that includes drums, sheaves, terminations, inspection intervals and operating loads. Product descriptions are a starting point. The equipment requirements and the certificate for the supplied rope govern the final choice.

What it is

What it is

A group of wires twisted into a strand for sustained tensile loading. Unlike running rope, strand is normally installed as a comparatively static support, guy or structural element.

What it is

Small-diameter cable commonly supplied in 7x7 or 7x19 construction. The 7x7 form offers moderate flexibility, while 7x19 uses more, smaller wires for repeated bending and tighter pulley systems.

Applications

What to specify

The name aircraft cable does not prove aerospace approval. Aerospace use requires a named specification, approval scope and lot traceability for the supplied product.

01What is the difference between wire rope, cable and strand?
Wire rope is a complete load-bearing assembly made from several strands laid around a core. Cable is a broader term often used for smaller, more flexible constructions such as 7x7 and 7x19. Strand is one group of wires twisted together. It can be a component inside wire rope or a finished product for guys, supports and structural tension systems.
02What do construction numbers such as 7x7, 7x19 and 6x36 mean?
The first number identifies the number of strands. The second identifies the nominal number of wires in each strand. A 7x19 cable has seven strands with nineteen wires per strand, while a 6x36-class rope has six outer strands with many smaller wires. More, smaller wires usually improve flexibility and bending-fatigue performance, but construction alone does not establish strength or suitability.
03How do I choose between a fiber core and a steel core?
A fiber core can support lubrication and provide flexibility. An independent wire rope core usually adds metallic area, crush resistance and strength. The correct choice depends on drum pressure, sheave geometry, temperature, duty cycle and the equipment manufacturer's requirements. Core type must appear in the rope designation and supplier certificate.
04Is galvanized aircraft cable approved for aircraft use?
Not automatically. Aircraft cable commonly describes compact 7x7 or 7x19 constructions sold for controls and general assemblies. Aerospace use requires a named aerospace specification, product and lot traceability, and evidence that the supplier's approval scope covers the supplied cable. The category name and construction are not approval evidence.
05When is rotation-resistant wire rope required?
Rotation-resistant rope is considered when a suspended load can spin, especially in single-part lines, long lifts and some crane systems. It uses opposing strand layers to reduce rope torque. Selection and handling must follow the crane and rope manufacturer's rules because rotation class, fleet angle, end termination and installation method affect performance.
06What information should be included in a wire-rope request for quote?
Include the application, nominal diameter, construction, core, lay direction, finish, tensile or strength grade, minimum breaking force, lubrication, operating environment, required standard, reel or coil package and quantity. For replacements, include the equipment model and the full designation from the existing rope certificate or tag.
