Lookdown Dory

A delicate and sweet, firm, white flesh fish with fine flakes.

Lookdown Dory is also known as King Dory.

Lookdown Dory gets its name after its large eyes which are situated well above the jaw.

Found all around New Zealand in depths of 200-800 metres and it is the most common of the three offshore Dory species (Lookdown, Silver and Mirror Dories).

Lookdown Dory belongs to the Zeidae family (dories).

Physical attributes

Lookdown Dory have a pale brown-pink body above and silver grey on the side with grey fins. The eyes are well above the jaw, hence the name 'lookdown'. There bodies are thin and deep like that of the other Dory species.

With delicate & sweet flavours, Lookdown Dory fillets have a low oil content, fine flakes and few bones.

Sustainability

Lookdown Dory is managed by the Ministry for Primary Industries using the New Zealand Quota Management System (QMS). Catch levels are determined by the MPI to ensure sustainable fishing methods are continuously being practiced by all commercial fisheries throughout New Zealand.

Regular stock assessments are conducted to estimate fishery stock size and numbers. Scientific studies are also used. From these, scientists can estimate future stock sizes and catch limits.

Geographical location

Lookdown Dory are found off the coast of New Zealand, Southern Australia and South Africa. In New Zealand they are most commonly caught by trawl on the Chatham Rise.

Flavour and cooking

With delicate and sweet flavours, Lookdown Dory fillets are white with fine flakes which hold together well when cooked. Lookdown Dory is suitable for most cooking methods including baked, fried, poached and steamed.
